Is Your Ear Leaking? What You Need to Know About Ear Discharge

Ear discharge, also known as otorrhea, is a common symptom that can be caused by a variety of conditions. It can range from a simple blockage of ear to a more serious infection. Ear discharge can be watery, bloody, or thick and pus-like. It may also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as ear pain, fever, itching, vertigo, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss.

Causes of ear discharge:

  • Swimmer’s ear: Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear canal that is often caused by bacteria or fungi. It can be caused by water trapped in the ear canal after swimming or bathing.
  • Middle ear infection: A middle ear infection is an infection of the middle ear, which is located behind the eardrum. It can be caused by bacteria or viruses.
  • Ruptured eardrum: A ruptured eardrum is a tear in the eardrum that can be caused by an injury, such as a blow to the head, or by a middle ear infection.
  • Foreign object in the ear: A foreign object, such as a cotton swab or a small toy, can become lodged in the ear canal and cause ear discharge.
  • Skin conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as eczema, can cause ear discharge.

If you are experiencing ear discharge, it is important to see a doctor to determine the cause and get treatment. Early treatment can help to prevent complications, such as hearing loss.

Here are some tips for preventing ear discharge:

  • Clean your ears with the tip of a towel only, avoid ear buds (Q-tips).
  • Avoid using cotton swabs to clean your ears, as they can push earwax further into the ear canal and damage the eardrum.
  • Dry your ears thoroughly after swimming or showering.
  • Use earplugs when swimming in water that may be contaminated with bacteria or fungi.
  • See a doctor if you have any other symptoms, such as ear pain, fever, or hearing loss. Contact us for further details.
