Tips for keeping your ears healthy while swimming

Summer is here and summer vacations are starting now. You must be planning on taking a swim or consider starting swimming as a regular physical activity. Are you worried about how to protect your ears while swimming? How do you prevent swimmer’s ears in children?

Here are some tips for keeping your ears healthy while swimming:

Minimize Moisture:

  • Ear drying: After swimming, tilt your head to allow water to drain out of your ears. You can also gently jump or hop on one foot at a time to dislodge any trapped water.
  • Swim caps: Wearing a well-fitting swim cap can create a physical barrier that reduces the amount of water entering the ear canal.

Earwax Management:

  • Leave it alone: Earwax plays a natural protective role, trapping dust and debris. Avoid using cotton swabs or other objects to clean your ears, as this can irritate the canal and actually push wax further in.
  • Softening drops: If you experience excessive earwax buildup, consult a doctor. They may recommend over-the-counter ear drops to soften the wax for easier removal.

Preventative Measures:

  • Ear plugs: For extra protection, consider using specially designed swimmer’s earplugs. These create a tight seal to block water entry. Look for silicone or molded plugs for a more comfortable and secure fit.
  • Clean water: Avoid swimming in stagnant water sources like ponds or poorly maintained pools, as these environments harbor more bacteria that can increase infection risk.
  • Doctor consultation: If you have a history of ear infections, ear drum perforations, or use ear tubes, consult your doctor before swimming and inquire about any specific precautions you might need to take.

Additional Tips:

  • Shower after swimming: Rinse your ears with clean water after swimming to remove any residual chlorine or bacteria.
  • Avoid scratching: Itchy ears can be tempting to scratch, but resist the urge. Scratching can damage the delicate skin of the ear canal and increase infection risk.

By following these tips, you can minimize your chances of developing swimmer’s ear and enjoy a safe and healthy swimming season.
